The Deadly Trade: The Complete History of Submarine Warfare from Archimedes to the Present

Iain Ballantyne

Sunday 14th October 13:15 - 14:15 | Northwood House

The Deadly Trade is a comprehensive account of the history of submarine warfare by the acclaimed naval writer Iain Ballantyne. Considered ineffectual and originally derided and loathed in equal measure these underwater boats have evolved into the most terrifying vessels, with many carrying nuclear arms. Using key episodes of submarine warfare including the first sinking of a vessel by a submersible during the American War of Independence, Iain’s vivid history not only tells the story of the boats but highlights those who have risked their lives under the sea, often with fatal consequences. Iain Ballantyne is interviewed by the Rt Hon.Sir Richard Ottaway, former member of the Intelligence and Security Committee.
