A Biographer’s Life

Mary S Lovell

Thursday 10th October 15:20 - 16:20 | Northwood House

An accountant and company director for 20 year, Mary S Lovell wrote her first book in 1981 at the age of 40. She has been writing full time for over 30 years and in that time has published 10 biographies most of which have been best-sellers and some have been international best sellers, including Amelia Earhart (which was turned into a major movie starring Richard Gere and Hilary Stamp),  A Scandalous Life (the story of Jane Digby – Lovell’s favourite subject), and The Mitford Girls and The Churchills.

Lovell is noted for her intensive research methods and all her non-fiction books are extensively annotated. She feels strongly that “biography is history.” She knows the island well having worked in Cowes from 1970 to 1977 and sailed and raced in local regattas for 15 years. Interviewed by Emma Gedge.
