Jonathan Fenby

Sunday 13th October 11:40 - 12:40 | Northwood House

The world was transformed between the summers of 1947 and 1948. The Cold War between the West and the Soviet Union became entrenched as the United States took on a global role with the Marshall Plan and the Berlin Airlift. India and Pakistan won independence from Britain. The state of Israel was created, and the first war with the Arab nations erupted.

The Chinese Communists gained the upper hand in the civil war of control of the world’s most populous nation. Nationalist revolts against European empires flared in Asia and Africa. Apartheid was introduced in South Africa. Korea was divided. Germany and Japan began their revival from defeat. Major technological changes were introduced and the welfare state was rolled out in Europe.

Jonathan Fenby will describe the torrent of events which set the pattern that shapes the world to this day with major actors dominating the global stage from Harry Truman and Joseph Stalin to Mao Zedong, Chiang Kai-shek, Nehru and Jinnah.
