In Your Defence: Stories of Life and Law

Sarah Langford

Friday 11th October 12:20 - 13:20 | Northwood House

Sarah Langford is a barrister. Her job is to stand in court representing the mad and the bad, the vulnerable, the heartbroken and the hopeful. She must become their voice: weave their story around the black and white of the law and tell it to the courtroom. These stories may not make headlines but they will change the lives of ordinary people in extraordinary ways.

With remarkable candour, Sarah has turned her experience of 11 criminal cases into short stories that are as compelling as fiction, with the added fascination of being essentially true. They reveal what goes on in our criminal and family courts: these are tales of domestic fall out, everyday burglary, sexual indiscretion and children caught up in the law. They are sometimes shocking and often heart-stopping. She examines how she feels as she defends the person standing in the dock and shows us how our attitudes and actions can shape not only the outcome of a case, but the legal system itself.

Sarah will discuss how – and why – her book came about, and the context in which she wrote it. She will look at some of the people she met throughout her journey as a barrister, examine whether our legal system works or whether it fails, and make a case for why we should all care about what goes on in our courtrooms, even if we never step a foot inside one.
