Oscar A Life

Matthew Sturgis

Saturday 12th October 11:20 - 12:20 | Northwood House

‘Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about.’ Oscar Wilde’s life – like his wit – as alive with paradox. He was both an early exponent and a victim of ‘celebrity culture’. He was an unabashed snob who, nevertheless, delighted in exposing the faults of society; a dandy who was given to great acts of kindness. Although happily married, he became a passionate lover of men and – at the peak of his success – brought disaster upon himself.

Matthew Sturgis examines the contradictions and confusions of his colourful life.
